Microsoft released Windows 7 to the general public on October22, 2009. While it is still Vista under the hood, it has many of Vista's annoyances removed. Many of the frills Vista installed by default and produced bloat are now user options for installation. User account control (UAC) had been improved dramatically to prevent its being a pain in the mouse as it was in Vista. Although the reviewers say it is not substantially faster than Vista, it feels much snappier to me. Hardware requirements remain about the same as Vista. There may be some consternation regarding 32-bit versus 64-bit and the driver-related issues entailed. 64-bit drivers are just beginning to come into their own. Most older (read as two years old or older) printers, scanners, etc. will not have drivers to allow them to work with 64-bit Windows 7 while the 32-bit drivers should abound. So -- now we wait to see how the masses respond to Windows 7. Will it erase the foul memories of Vista? Time will tell. Stay tuned!
And Vista came and went...

Vista Service Pack I has now been out for some time and is quite stable. Vista continues to suffer from minor incompatibilities and a lack of drivers for older hardware - especially the 64-bit version. It needs lots of CPU power, memory, hard drive speed and drive space to run effectively. Also, to take advantage of the new graphics ("Aero"), you need a stout graphics card with lots of on-board memory. And now Windows 7, the nest iteration of Windows, is somewhere on the horizon. It could arrive as soon as this fall. It appears that Microsoft is attempting to remedy some issues and perhaps lighten the heavy hardware load of Vista. So -- do you stick with XP, move to Vista, or wait for Windows 7? Call us to discuss the options and the pros and cons of each.

Vista continues to gain market share as new PCs are sold. Should you purchase a PC with Vista preinstalled or opt for XP? Should you wait until Vista's Service Pack 1 arrives (perhaps in first quarter 2008) or go ahead with it now? Will your current PC run Vista effectively? What is the Vista learning curve?
